1. Symptoms of Avian Influenza in Chickens

Chickens infected with avian influenza can exhibit a range of symptoms, particularly when infected with the highly pathogenic form (HPAI). These may include:

  1. Sudden death
  2. Swollen head
  3. Closed and runny eyes
  4. Lethargy and depression
  5. Lack of coordination
  6. Decreased appetite
  7. Sudden changes in water consumption
  8. Shaking of the head and body
  9. Drooping wings
  10. Dragging legs
  11. Twisting of the head and neck
  12. Swelling and blue discoloration of comb and wattles
  13. Haemorrhages on legs and under the skin of the neck
  14. Breathing difficulties
  15. Fever
  16. Discolored or watery droppings
  17. Significant drop in egg production

2. Symptoms of Avian Influenza in Birds

The symptoms in birds can be similar to those in chickens and may include:

  1. Respiratory distress (gaping, coughing, sneezing)
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Nervous signs (paralysis, uncoordinated movements)
  4. Swelling of the head
  5. Depression and lack of energy
  6. Decreased egg production
  7. Sudden death

3. Treatment for Avian Influenza in Birds

Treatment options for avian influenza are limited. The main approach is to control the spread of the virus through biosecurity measures. In some cases, antiviral medications like Oseltamivir, Zanamivir, or Peramivir may be used. However, most countries opt for a culling policy to manage outbreaks effectively.

4. Symptoms of Avian Influenza in Poultry

Poultry, including chickens, turkeys, and ducks, can show a range of symptoms from mild to severe, depending on the pathogenicity of the virus strain. Symptoms can include:

  1. Respiratory distress
  2. Lack of energy and appetite
  3. Decreased egg production
  4. Diarrhea
  5. Swollen head
  6. Blue discoloration of comb and wattles
  7. High mortality rates

It’s important to note that these symptoms can vary and not all infected birds will show all symptoms. Laboratory tests are necessary to confirm avian influenza. If you suspect avian influenza in any birds, it is crucial to report it to the appropriate health authorities immediately.
